The kids enjoyed rotating through 12 different stations such as relay races, tug-of-war, jumping in the moonwalk, and lots more.  | | Thanks Krystal Middleton | The Area 17 Special Olympic Games were held Wednesday, May 7th at Savannah Country Day School. The opening ceremonies kicked off the events with Mike Cihla (from WTOC) introducing the schools that were participating. Nine athletes from Smily Elementary, Walker Middle, and Long County High participated. They did an excellent job representing Long County. The team brought home 10 first place ribbons, 4 second place ribbons, 2 third place ribbons and 1 fifth place ribbon. Retirement Celebration Ray Holloway, the Maintence and Transportation Director for Long County Schools, was honored with a retirement celebration at Smiley Elementary lunchroom on Sunday, May 4 from 2pm-4pm. Friends, family, and co-workers attended to share their best wishes for Ray. The reception included a grand entrace into Long County in a hearse with accompanying police escort, some tongue in cheek presentations, a powerpoint show of pictures celebrating Ray, lots of good food, and gifts of appreciation. Mrs. Debbie Long thanks everyone who made this day special for Ray Holloway and honored his 34 years of service to Long County Schools.LCHS Senior Trip
 | | Thanks Amanda Blocker for story and pictures. | Thirty-one Long County High School seniors and four chaperones attended the annual Grad Celebration trip to Orlando May 1-3. The seniors visited Animal Kingdom, Magic Kingdom, Disney's Hollywood Studios, Epcot, Universal Studios, and Islands of Adventure. They also enjoyed dinner and a show at Medieval Times. The trip is an annual event to cap off the students' senior year. Smiley Elementary Spring Fling Students and their parents enjoyed the annual Smiley Elementary Spring Fling Celebration. There was lots of games, food, and fun for everyone. Principal Sandy Jones thanks everyone for helping to make this event so successful. The money raised from the Spring Fling was about $2,700 which will be used to fund future endeavors at Smiley to promote student success.Larger Than Life Beauty Contest Affairs & Occasions is hosting the first annual PLUS-SIZE beauty pageant called "Larger Than Life" to help support the Long County Relay for Life. Contestants must be at least a size 14 and at least 18 years of age to enter. The deadline for entry is May 15, 2008. The pageant will be Saturday May 31, 2008 at 7:00 pm at the Long County High School Cafetorium. Admission will be $3.00 per person. The Long County Probate Office has released the names of candidates running for various political offices. Elections will be held on July 15th but the public is encouraged to participate in advanced voting the week before. The candidates include:
